Chapter Seventeen

Clint managed to grab some sleep after he got home and might have squeezed in some more shuteye except he’d left his phone on the nightstand. The familiar ring jerked him out of a hot dream about Tyra. He picked up his phone and tapped the screen. “Dad?”

“Hey, there, son. I’m in Missoula in the process of renting a car. I jerry-rigged this trip and wasn’t sure whether it would come together. I barely made the last connection but here I am. Any chance I can bunk with you for a few nights?”

“Of course! How long can you stay?”

“I’ve booked a red-eye for Monday night, which only gives us three and a half days but I decided to take advantage of a break between projects. The last one wrapped up on Wednesday and the new one starts shooting next week.”

“Three and a half days is better than nothing. Cheyenne will be excited. Have you called him?”

“Started with you since I didn’t know his schedule and I also figured I’d be staying with you since I’m not about to barge in on the newlyweds. But if you have a live-in lady friend I don’t know about, then I’ll—”

“I don’t, and the guest room is yours. Can’t wait to see you. Cheyenne’s on duty through Sunday morning, but he might be able to switch with someone.”

“If not, at least I’ll get to see him for a couple of days. I knew I was taking a chance on you guys being available. You must have way more responsibilities at the Buffalo than you did last time I was there.”

“I do, but my schedule’s flexible. My boss is great.” And that comment had a new meaning since last night’s episode.

“That’s still Tyra, I hope?”

“Yep.”

“Frank let me know she’d agreed to take over, but I haven’t heard from him recently. She’s happy being back in Wagon Train?”

“Seems to be. Anyway, I’m not due at the Buffalo until ten. If you can get here before nine-thirty, we can—”

“Are you kidding? I’ll be there in forty-five minutes. We’ll have some time to catch up.”

The trip normally took an hour, but speed limits had never made sense to Nick Reynolds. After he’d lived in other parts of the world, they made even less. “Take it easy, Dad.”

His father just laughed. “See you in forty-five minutes.”

Forty minutes later, Clint had showered, shaved, made up the guest bed and straightened up the house. Fortunately he kept it fairly neat.

The coffee pot was burbling when his dad pulled up outside and honked the horn. Clint didn’t bother putting on a jacket as he headed out the door and down the steps. He grinned when his father levered himself out of the low-slung seat of a yellow Corvette. “Nice ride, Dad.”

“Can you believe some dude changed his mind about renting this beauty? They gave me a smokin’ deal, so why not?”

“Because it’s winter in Montana? You’d better pray we don’t get a blizzard.”

“We won’t. My luck’s running this weekend. I can feel it.
